The inaugural Greater Lansing Sports Awards, which are being sponsored by Michigan State University Federal Credit Union and Sparrow, will take place at 6 p.m. June 7 at the Lansing Center.

From state champion football, soccer, cross country and bowling teams to a pair of individual state champion gymnasts, it’s been another banner year for high school sports in mid-Michigan.

And the Lansing State Journal will soon be honoring the achievements of these athletes in a first-of-its-kind gala event.

The Greater Lansing Sports Awards, which are being sponsored by Michigan State University Federal Credit Union and Sparrow Hospital, will recognize about 300 athletes at 6 p.m., June 7 at the Lansing Center.

The keynote speaker is former Michigan State standout and current Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins. The event is open to the public.

All athletes recognized on an LSJ Dream Team during the 2015-2016 school year will be honored during the ceremony. (Dream Team athletes from the fall and winter seasons should have received a form from their athletic director to secure complementary admission to the event).

Spring athletes will be notified later this month as the Dream Teams are announced and at that time will receive their awards night invite.

In addition to Dream Teams, there will be other new and special awards such as top student-athlete, best video and team of the year.

This event and these awards are a way for the LSJ to celebrate all the positive things in high school sports and to recognize athletes succeeding on and off the field.

Tickets to the dinner and awards show are $50 and may be purchased at https://tickets.lansingstatejournal.com/e/greater-lansing-high-school-sports-awards-banquet-.
