The final out of the high school baseball and softball seasons, the last round of golf and the final half of soccer are still a few weeks away.

There are still plenty of competitions before the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s 2015-16 school year officially comes to an end June 18.

It has been the tradition of the Lansing State Journal to wait until the completion of each sports season before determining members of our Dream Teams and players of the year.

However, that tradition is being altered for spring sports athletes this year – and for good reason.

The Greater Lansing Sports Awards – a first-of-its-kind, gala event – will recognize all the positive things in high school sports June 7 at the Lansing Center.

Former Michigan State standout and Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is the keynote speaker for the event.

Special award winners and all Dream Team athletes from the 2015-16 school year will be recognized. That means the LSJ already has picked its spring Dream Teams – in order to give all the athletes and their families time to accept our invitation to the event. Players of the year will be unveiled at the event.

The Dream Team athletes were determined based on individual and team performances up to this point. Additional athletes could be honored on Dream Teams if their performances over the final weeks of the spring season warrant recognition. Those athletes will be recognized when the Dream Teams are published in print and online.
